Historical Celebrations

Faithful to the tradition, the historical celebrations revive the greatest moments in the history of Vannes. A festive mood will reign in the historical town-centre.


12th, 13th and 14th July in the town centre


Narrative dressed-up tableaux, street festivities, parades …The Historical Celebrations have maintained the tradition for more than 20 years now, bringing back to life the important moments in the history of Vannes in an entertaining and festive mood, with the complicity of hundreds of walk-on extras and thousands of faithful spectators.
In 2009, the festivities will revive four major moments in the history of Vannes.

 

  • 578, WAROG or WAROCH (or WAROCHUS), Breton king, seizes Vannes and establishes his domination on the country of Vannes which will take his name for twelve centuries.
 
  • 1387, ‘JEAN Vth’. At the ‘Château de l’Hermine’, birth of the future ‘Jean Vth’, nicknamed ‘The wise’, who will reign from 1399 to 1434 and will remain the greatest duke of Brittany.
 
  • 1697, August 12th, King Louis XIVth signs the edict allowing the people of Vannes to use the stones of the ‘Hermine’ to build the quays of the harbour of Vannes, symbol of the marine growth of the city under the old regime.
 
  • JULY 1801, the first consul ‘Napoléon Bonaparte’ appoints General Jullien, his battle companion in Egypt and Italy, prefect of Morbihan confirming the role of Vannes as chief town of the county of Morbihan.
