The twinning scheme between the two towns has been in existence since 1963.
Located in the province of Lower-Saxony, at the end of the peninsula between the estuaries of the Elbe and the Waser in the North Sea. The town has 55,000 inhabitants and is in fact the outer harbour of Hamburg. Its principal industries are tourism and fishing.
