Every year in spring, Cosmos, Knapwort, Zinnias, Candytuft, Marigold, Cornflower, California poppies and other rustic plants are planted in town and flower our main streets... bringing us back into touch with nature in the summertime.
THE COUNTRY COMES TO TOWN
In springtime, Cosmos, Knapwort, Zinnias, Candytuft, Marigold, Cornflower, California poppies and other rustic plants are planted in town and flower our main streets.
This phenomenon is the fruit of close collaboration between Vannes town council (parks and gardens department), the Chamber of Agriculture and the Departmental federation of hunters. These organisations develop mixtures of flowers for fallow land. The species selected have great melliferous potential, which means that they are a good source of pollen providing food for a wide range of insects.
The parks and gardens service adapts the floral composition to our urban environment:
- creation of a different chromatic colour arrangement every year,
- sowing density of the order of 5 grams per sq. m.,
- sowing is carried out from March to the end of April for blossoming from the end of June to the first frosts.
2.5 hectares of meadows are sown in total throughout the district (along the roads to Rennes and to Pontivy, in the Fourchêne area, on the north and south ringroads, along the roads to Séné and Nantes...).
