Vannes is the third largest University centre in Brittany.In 1986 Vannes accommodated 1,500 students.There were more than 5,200 in 2000 and at the end of 2006 their number had reached nearly 6,500. Colleges in Vannes also propose many different technical diplomas and preparatory classes for prestigious higher education establishments.
The “Université de Bretagne Sud” (South Brittany University), which is spread between campuses in Vannes, Lorient and Pontivy, proposes many undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses.Four IUT (polytechnic) departments and an IUP (professional polytechnic) complete this offer of higher education courses.
The UBS is to open an engineering college at the start of the 2007 educational year.

The “Université de Bretagne-Sud” in Vannes is comprised of three departments located in the town centre, in Tohannic and in Kercado.
The “Ecole nationale supérieure d'ingénieurs de Bretagne-Sud (ENSIBS)” (South Brittany National Engineering College) is scheduled to open in September 2007 on the Tohannic campus.
